‘Southland’ logs most days as pilots take off

Location shooting in Hollywood has ramped up with the mainstay TV category jumping 27% last week with increases across the board in dramas, pilots, reality and sitcoms.

TV shooting totaled 513 days, up 109 days from the same period of 2012, according to figures released Tuesday by the FilmL.A. permitting agency. “Southland” logged the most off-lot activity with 33 days.

Pilot activity in Los Angeles has become three times as active compared with 2012 following a robust round of pilot pickups last month.

Feature shoots totaled a moderate 114 days, led by indies “A Dog Named Suki” with 24 days with shooting on Highland Avenue in Hollywood and “Heaven,” shooting at Will Rogers State Beach.

Commercial shoots have remained robust in recent weeks as SAG-AFTRA prepares to launch negotiations on Valentine’s Day for a successor deal with the ad industry. The industry’s lead negotiator has warned companies to avoid scheduling shoots after the March 31 expiration.
